Annie

Nominated for a Tony Award for BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, our production had over two dozen weeks grossing over $1 million each week, and even included a stint of Glee’s Jane Lynch stepping into the role of Miss Hannigan.

Based on the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip which debuted in 1924 and ran for over 80 years, Annie is set in Depression Era New York City at a time when the economy looked bleak, government seemed ineffective and the average citizen was desperate and frustrated. Sound familiar? With its hopeful message and unwavering belief in a better tomorrow, Annie became one of the biggest Broadway musical hits of the 1970s, running for almost six years and playing 2,377 performances. The musical won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin), the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, and the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album.

Beyond the inspiring story, Annie‘s return to Broadway also offered a unique opportunity to deliver a message of change and hope into our lives. Drawing on lessons learned from their leading lady, the Annie team of producers and artists recognized the importance of giving back and committed to undertake fundraising and volunteer efforts that benefitted children and dogs through local and national charities and social service organizations.

The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s most thrilling and controversial plays, rich with love and betrayal, forgiveness and revenge. The Jewish moneylender Shylock makes a loan to Antonio, a Christian merchant. Their loan contract, steeped in prejudice and centered on the play’s infamous “pound of flesh,” sweeps the two men and everyone in their worlds into chaos. Only the insightful Portia can imagine a way forward, but for her and those she loves, even “the quality of mercy” has its limits.

Lewis Black: Running on Empty

MEP presented this special politically-charged one-person show for one week on Broadway…just prior to the 2012 election.

Black, a stand-up comedian, actor, and author, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. A graduate from the Yale School of Drama, an accomplished playwright, a familiar presence on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and a Grammy Award-winning artist, Black performs over 200 nights a year to sell-out audiences around the world. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theatres including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Under the direction of Tracy Ward (Hunter Gatherers, Bay Area Premiere), choreography by Nicole McGann and a “pop-up book inspired” set design by Andrea Bechert; the magic of each song brings new life to the material for a young audience and to audiences that have grown up reading the legendary stories of native New England author Tomie dePaola.
